Key West's First Michelin Nods Went to Breakfast

The MICHELIN Guide covered all of Florida for the first time this year, and its inspectors drove "from the Panhandle to Key West." In the Keys, they recognized two places, and the dishes Michelin named at both are eggs Benedict and Key lime pie.

Moondog Café & Bakery at 823 Whitehead Street received a Bib Gourmand, Michelin's award for very good food at a reasonable price. Blue Heaven at 729 Thomas Street was named MICHELIN Recommended. On the official 2026 Florida lists, these are the only two Florida Keys restaurants in either category.

Michelin announced the picks on May 28, during the slow season. Since then the airlines have been bringing back their winter routes, so the coming season is the first time both kitchens will face peak crowds with a Michelin listing attached.

Why the Guide Showed Up This Year

Michelin's Florida guide began in 2022 and covered only Greater Miami, Orlando and Tampa. It expanded in 2025, and it went statewide in 2026. Key West restaurants had never been eligible before, so this was the first year they could be recognized at all.

The Key West Citizen reported that the two restaurants were the first in the Keys recognized by Michelin's Florida guide. Moondog manager Eric Koch told the paper, "The team has been working consistent and hard for literally years at this point. Yeah, so somebody needs to recognize that and for us to get that award is great."

The inspectors had a whole island to choose from, and both of their picks stand out for breakfast.

What the Michelin Listings Name

A Michelin listing names specific dishes. Here is what each listing singled out:

Moondog Café & Bakery Blue Heaven
Address 823 Whitehead St. 729 Thomas St.
Michelin distinction Bib Gourmand Recommended
Savory dish named Fresh-catch eggs Benedict with avocado, grilled tomato, blackened fish, poached eggs and Hollandaise Key West shrimp Benedict with local shrimp and lime Hollandaise
Also named Key lime pie with graham crust, tart custard and torched meringue Fluffy pecan pancakes; Key lime pie with baked meringue
Daily hours 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., then 5 to 10 p.m.

Both listings name a Benedict and a Key lime pie, and the main difference is the meringue: torched at Moondog, baked at Blue Heaven.

Moondog's own menu goes well beyond the dishes on its listing. According to the Miami Herald, the café is known first as a breakfast spot. Its draws include croissants, blueberry-lemon quinoa pancakes and Elvis French Toast, which is made with banana bread, stuffed with peanut butter, bacon and banana, and topped with bourbon maple syrup. The Herald also reported that lunch and dinner have drawn more attention in recent years, including burgers, fisherman's stew and the Green Giant veggie burger, a family recipe more than 30 years old.

Two Kitchens With Long Local Roots

Neither restaurant is new. Both have been run by the same owners for years.

Blue Heaven sits at Thomas and Petronia streets in a building the Key West Citizen dates to 1886, with an expansion in the 1930s. According to the restaurant's own history, the property has housed a spirits shop, cockfighting and gambling, a boxing arena, a billiard hall and an ice cream parlor. Upstairs it has been a dance hall, a bordello, a gallery and a playhouse. The Citizen also reports the old story that Hemingway refereed boxing matches there.

Richard Hatch and his wife, Suanne, served their first lunch customers there on September 19, 1992. In June, Hatch told the Miami Herald how the restaurant started:

"I think back to when we opened and remember putting some flowers on a picnic table and serving jerk fish, rice and beans just hoping for a customer. And look at us now."

He gave Keys Weekly the same memory in different words: "Thousands of hours of hard work have been rewarded by the premier restaurant rating service in the world. I remember sweeping the brick patio and hoping for a customer." The Key West Citizen added that Blue Heaven makes its own citrus juice, breads and desserts.

Moondog has been open since 2018. Its owners, Jamille Cucci and Dominique Falkner, also run Banana Cafe and The Cafe, and Cucci has described all three as independently owned and operated. They told Keys Weekly, "We've always focused on honest food, genuine hospitality and creating the kind of place we'd want to eat at ourselves."

Hatch explained to the Herald why independent restaurants like these are hard to start on this island: "It's tough to open a restaurant in Key West if you don't own the property. Rents are just crazy, plus all the rules and regulations just to get started." Michelin's first Keys picks went to two operations that are already established.

The Season the Lines Get Longer

Even before Michelin, Blue Heaven had long breakfast waits. The Miami Herald reported that the wait was at least an hour even during the slower summer months. Hatch said the recognition was "already having an effect," adding, "We're super busy. The chefs are stoked."

Cucci told the Herald that people came into Moondog on announcement day already knowing about the award, and that "a lot more people follow Michelin than we had expected." She also said the island's food has long been "a well known secret that people who live in Key West hold close to their chests," and that the recognition gives visitors "another reason to come visit aside from the fishing and the sunsets."

Those comments came in June. A few practical details matter more now that winter crowds are arriving:

  • Blue Heaven seats breakfast and lunch first-come, first-served. Dinner takes walk-ins, and a limited number of reservations are available by phone.
  • Happy hour at Blue Heaven runs 3:30 to 5 p.m., between lunch and dinner service.
  • Blue Heaven closes on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. That covers two of the season's busiest holidays.
  • Blue Heaven takes an annual break. Hatch told the Key West Citizen, "We close the day after Labor Day and then we reopen right before Goombay."
  • Moondog serves from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, so its Bib Gourmand menu is available at every meal.
  • Moondog's Michelin listing notes that the café handles its own bookings, and suggests contacting the restaurant directly.
  • Moondog's bakery makes croissants, danishes, cookies, cakes and pies, and it takes advance orders for groups.

The bakery is the simplest way to have Moondog's food without waiting for a table. A pie ordered ahead for a holiday dinner or a box of pastries for houseguests skips the dining room entirely. When you walk in, the house-made pastries are displayed by the entrance.

Whitehead Street's Next Opening

Moondog is about a minute's walk from the Hemingway Home & Museum, according to the Miami Herald. Farther up the same street, the Tennessee Williams Museum is moving to a permanent home at 604 Whitehead Street.

The Key West Art & Historical Society runs the museum. It closed its old location at 513 Truman Avenue on July 5 and announced that the new space will have more galleries, artifacts, manuscripts and multimedia exhibits. The museum started in 2011 as a temporary exhibit for Williams' 100th birthday, and he lived in Key West for more than three decades. Founder and curator Dennis Beaver said in the Key West Chamber announcement that the move "gives us the opportunity to tell that story in exciting new ways." The Florida Keys tourism office's October update lists the opening for late fall 2026, and the museum's page has the latest on hours.

So Whitehead Street now has the island's Bib Gourmand café and two writers' museums: the Hemingway Home, already a minute's walk from Moondog, and the Tennessee Williams Museum on its way. Blue Heaven is at 729 Thomas Street. Coffee, a literary museum and Key lime pie can all fit into one morning.
