Welcome to Marathon

The heart of the Keys, with true year-round community and exceptional boating access

Set near the midpoint of the island chain, Marathon combines the ease of a year-round hometown with everything people love about the Florida Keys. The city spans multiple islands, including much of Vaca Key, Fat Deer Key, Grassy Key and nearby smaller keys, creating a diverse collection of waterfront neighborhoods. Residents enjoy grocery stores, medical services, an airport, marinas and schools, along with Sombrero Beach, Coco Plum Beach, the historic Old Seven Mile Bridge and some of the Keys' most beloved wildlife attractions. Marathon is equally suited to full-time living, a second home or a boating-centered investment, with quick access to both the Atlantic and Gulf.

LOCAL DETAIL

Marathon's name is commonly linked to railroad workers who described construction of Henry Flagler's Overseas Railway as a marathon effort. Today, the restored Old Seven Mile Bridge leads walkers and cyclists toward historic Pigeon Key.

ON THE WATER

The Grassy Key or Valhalla Sandbar is a favorite gathering spot east of town. Boaters also enjoy the shallow waters around Molasses Key near the Seven Mile Bridge, along with Sombrero Reef for snorkeling and diving. Sandbars and reefs require different anchoring practices, so reef-safe boating is essential.

WHERE TO EAT

Rhum House at Grassy Flats or Butterfly Cafe at Tranquility Bay for a polished dinner; Castaway Waterfront Restaurant & Sushi Bar for seafood and sushi; Burdines Waterfront for casual burgers and fries; and Florida Keys Steak & Lobster House for a longtime local favorite. Grassy Key Land and Sea Market for butcher’s steaks, sandwiches, coffee, and artisan finds.

NOTABLE NEIGHBORHOODS & COMMUNITIES

Sombrero Beach and the Sister Creek waterways; Coco Plum Beach; Flamingo Island; Stirrup Key; Crane Point and central Vaca Key; Grassy Key; and the canal-front neighborhoods surrounding Boot Key Harbor.
