LOCAL DETAIL

Originally known as Roberts Island, Ramrod Key is said to have taken its present name from the ship Ramrod, which wrecked on a reef south of the island in the early 1800s.

Picnic Island and the shallows of Newfound Harbor are nearby favorites for relaxed boat days. Looe Key Reef is a protected sanctuary destination for snorkeling and diving, not a place to anchor on coral.
